Barrier-Free Design

Barrier-free design refers to architecture and interior design which has developed into an international standard to accommodate the physically challenged. This desire for information and service to a particular community began in 1985.
We maintain that “Architecture is an extension of the human body” and thus, any sense or ability unavailable to a user can and should be, in some way, present in the structure to accommodate that user.

L5 has consulted for the disabled community for twelve years including working with the New York City Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities and the Local Law 58 Task Force responsible for amending the New York City Building Code for accessible design. Barrier-free design services include:

Conceptual, preliminary design and construction documents;

Space planning. and

American with Disabilities Act (ADA)Title III Accessibility Audit and Compliance for existing and proposed projects.

Some of the work we had the privilege of working on include:

1. Multiple Unit Housing for the Homeless, Zen Buddhist Community of New York, Yonkers;

2. The Chemical Dependency Center, International Center for the Disabled, NY

3. Occupational Therapies Facility, International Center for the Disabled, NY

3. Office headquarters, Center for the Independence of the Disabled of New York

4. Office headquarters, Staten Island Independent Living Center.
